For every employee, they dread the possibility of getting laid off or fired from their job at every moment.
Unemployment would mean they would not have the funds to assist them to live their daily life and pay off whatever it is they need. It is also a status many do not like to have because of the embarrassment it could bring to a person, especially if others find out about it.
A few may even succumb to depression and give up, thinking that they cannot pass through this phase.
So, what can you do to get away from the depression brought by unemployment?
Understand that unemployment is a normal trend in job markets
Unemployment isn’t a rare occurrence as millions of people around the globe are unemployed. People are always moving in and out of jobs, which may prompt them to become unemployed at some point.
It is possible you had a job, but recently moved to one that won’t start for a couple of months. Reasons for unemployment can vary.
What you need to make sure is that your resume is properly updated and you are putting yourself out there to be found: whether it is registering with job agencies or staying current on your LinkedIn profile.
Use your contacts
If you are unemployed, do not be afraid to reach out to others. Your contacts may help you find the right job and even provide you with the reference you may need. Avoiding your friends would only restrict you from getting by your unemployment spell.
One great way to stay in contact is through LinkedIn where you are able to link up with your old colleagues and classmates.
Do not assume you will be criticized for being unemployed
When a family member or friend finds themselves jobless? Do you act as if they are outcasts?
Do not immediately think people will reject you for your situation. You may be surprised to hear them speak about their own experience when they were also jobless. They may even help you out with your problems if they know you need help.
Retake your life
If you are unemployed, do not let yourself fall in despair and close all opportunities to reclaim your normal life back. Look at unemployment as a challenge for you to overcome and ensure that it never happens to you again.
Know the reasons why you are unemployed and look into the solutions you can do to remedy it.
Are you lacking the right skills for your position? If that is a yes, upgrade your skills by taking extra courses or going back to school.
Were you signed up for the wrong job? If that is a yes, go look into the job listings and look for the job that matches your skills and credentials.
Was your employer too strict or your co-workers unbearable to work with? Switch to a new company.
Unemployment is a part of life a lot of people have to face. It isn’t something that happens to a select few. When you find yourself unemployed, do not treat it as the end of the world. Speak to other people and upgrade your skills if necessary. It may take time for you to find a new job, but with a little effort, you will be able to get past this phase.
Once you do, use it as an inspiration to work hard and help you keep your job for a long period of time. Stay positivity and stay strong. There is always a good reason why you are still unemployed; that reason may be that the opportunity hasn’t turned up yet.

I’ve been laid off numerous times. Two recessions cost me jobs. My company losing a major client left me unemployed. Another company was dying. Once or twice I took it hard as if it was my fault, but in hindsight, it was nothing I did that caused it. But I let it undermine my confidence which hindered my Jon search. One of the companies actually reached out and brought me back years later, which felt good.
Anyway, your contacts are invaluable. Every job I’ve landed was because I was recommended for it or a contact brought it to my attention.

Thanks Kally,
This is the quandary of everyone who has even been unemployed {and I suspect that’s MOST of us} and seeking employment.
One can see this an the “is the glass half full or half empty problem or opportunity.
Which is is for YOU, is dependent upon which is is FOR YOU.
YOU can make this a GREAT opportunity
Or YOU can make this a time to pout and get down on yourself.
Which will it be is up to YOU!
God Bless,
Patrick

Loved this post. About a year ago I was unemployed for a about a month because I too was laid off but I was not really ashamed. It was almost as if a weight was lifted off my shoulders and I was able to see the many possibilities out there for me. It re-energized me and motivated me to get out there and find a new job.

It’s a shame there’s such a stigma and judgement attached to being unemployed – it’s hard enough when you’re not employed to find work let alone others’ judging.
