Many of us starting out as a freelancer have difficulty choosing our specialty to offer to the public to attract clients.

For me, I started out as a translator because I’m fluent in both my native tongue, Mandarin, and English. As much as I am successful in this area, translation is not something I enjoy doing. After much soul searching or you can call in talent searching, I realized that I enjoyed the most when I’m writing and researching. And because I’m bubbly and a people person, I’m also well suited for customer service, sales, and social media management.

It doesn’t mean that you are good at something, you’ll enjoy doing it. In the long run, you will get burned out pretty fast, doing the things you don’t feel passionate about.

To help you out if you are a new freelancer or just someone thinking of venturing out on your own, I’m offering an insight on matching your personality to the kind of freelancing gigs you can offer to your clients.

  1. I am mix all of that. My first job was a lawyer. Only last for one year as I found it boring (ha..ha.. can you imagine). I like meet people and I find the Office Manager job was good but kind of boring after awhile.
I am retired early (on my own) and now trying to work out what I want to do:)

  2. Thanks for sharing, I am sure that it will help a lot of people toying with the idea of becoming a free lancer… however, due to my independent nature and following my father’s advice “never put all your eggs in one basket”, believe this ole hippie would probably be a free lancing “free lancer” and try little of this and a little of that…. 🙂

    1. I started off freelancing as a translator and quickly realised it is not for me even though I am native to two languages. You’re right in dabbing here and there, in the end, I am so much more successful as a freelance writer and recruiter.

  3. That’s always a dilemma, finding the right gig — I’ve been doing some freelancing but I don’t enjoy what I’m doing even though it was my bread and butter when I worked in agencies and the corporate world.

    1. Yes. I agree it is a dilemma but the beauty of freelancing is that it allows you to switch to a different skill and explore what works for you.

  4. This was absolutely amazing and incredibly helpful! I just started doing some research on getting into freelance writing, so I am extremely curious! I have been reading your posts and all of them so far have been incredibly helpful for me!
