ChatGPT is taking the world by storm with its capability to respond to questions its users throw at it, thanks to artificial intelligence. Many industries now use it for various applications to streamline their operations and have more resources freed for other aspects of the business. There are even thoughts who see new uses for the AI chat tool for personal applications.
While these benefits sound attractive, some argue that this AI tool presents considerable risks to its users. Some of these risks include potential hacking, illegal use of conversations and third parties accessing your conversations. Some even say it is terrible for the users who may anthropomorphize the tool and consider it a replacement for humans.
If you do plan to use ChatGPT for work (or for other purposes) but would like to reduce the risks it can bring to your data, here is a short list of information you should not share with the AI tool:
- Sensitive Personal Information – Information regarding your personal details, such as your bank accounts, payment information and account passwords, should not be in your conversations with the AI tool since it may expose your information to hacking.
- Personal Problems – Some people may use ChatGPT as an alternative to speaking to another person to discuss their issues. However, these conversations may be used to train the AI, which can be read by an OpenAI employee who checks the software regularly for potential abuse.
- Business Secrets – Since the tool can use conversations to teach the model, business secrets should be out of your discussions as the model may use it for those who ask questions that may lead to the business secrets you provided.
- Personal User Data – Although ChatGPT promises not to sell its user’s data to third parties, it still shares this information with vendors and other parties who manage the site.
If you genuinely want to use ChatGPT to help you understand trends and other data you encounter, it is still okay to do it. However, you must ensure you do not divulge too much information in the process and provide the app with brief but accurate information to get the desired results.
The AI tool comes with a unique setting that enables users to prevent the model from training itself and clears the tool’s cache and chat history.
Like many online programs and tools, one should exercise caution when using ChatGPT. While it is true that it can help you streamline your operations and assist in real-time tasks, it is not a perfect tool.
You must be careful when using this tool and take the necessary security steps to keep you safe each time you use it. If done right, you will be able to enjoy the benefits ChatGPT has to offer without worrying about your data being used for something else.

Yes, I think it’s important to do a risk analysis around how it can, and should be used.
I attended a presentation on Generative AI last week, which was extremely informative. The presenter used ChatGPT to demonstrate its strengths and weaknesses. One thing she said that made us all take note was: “this is the worst version you will experience.” Then she rolled out the very sobering statistics that ChatGPT reached 100 million users in just two months. It took Facebook 4.5 years, Spotify 11 years.
I did dabble with the trial version last year.
At this point, I can see that it will be a very handy tool to assist my staff and I. Will it put 300M out of a job, as speculated. I belong to the No camp on this issue. My thoughts are it is a tool that can free employees up so they can do what they really love to do and focus on those things that will create even greater value.
