Is a Sustainable Workplace Beneficial for Everyone?

When it comes to sustainability in the workplace, employees’ opinion varies. Some believe it is a vital effort everyone should support because it can improve every aspect of the workplace. Others believe it is not easy to do considering the office’s changes to support sustainability. A few believe it is nothing but wishful thinking, and climate change does not exist.

With these varying opinions, it can be difficult for business owners to think about investing in a sustainable workplace. Several studies have pointed out that having a sustainable workplace has both short-term and long-term benefits if businesses invest in changes to make it possible.

What are these benefits? Here are some of them below:

Improves Talent Recruitment And Employee Retention

Employees want to be a part of an organisation that focuses on involvement in causes they support, such as combating climate change and helping the poor.

A sustainable workplace will help you save money on recruiting, benefits and others since your new and current employees are supportive of your mission and in turn, you can use the saved funds for the greater good.

Gives Consumers Confidence About The Brand

Some clients nowadays look into a company’s position on sustainability before they do business with them. If they see that your company is irresponsible or passive to sustainability, they may boycott the brand entirely.

Reduces Energy Use For The Entire Office

While this benefit is not immediately seen, investing in sustainable technologies like LED lights, solar panels, and others can help reduce your energy use.

These sustainable technologies do not use power from traditional power lines that use coal and fossil fuel, contributing to pollution. Although these technologies are still expensive, the investment will be returned in the long run through tax breaks and reduced operational costs.

Build A Strong Relationship With The Government

If your company is sustainable, you will earn bonus points with the government. If the government sees that your workplace follows environment-friendly practices consistently, they will not do regular inspections, and you won’t face fines, complaints and hassles.

A sustainable workplace will also boost your position in the industry as a leader in advocating sustainability.

Opens Better Opportunities And Investments

Having a sustainable workplace will open more opportunities and investments to come your way. Many clients and companies are actively looking for companies that advocate for sustainable development and embrace innovation, and this will open up new opportunities and businesses your way.

As a business or company, investing in technologies and strategies to foster sustainability in the workplace is a must if you want to continue growing your brand. Not only will it help your business get new opportunities and maximise its investments, but it will also keep everyone happy and inspired to do their best.

If your business is unable to keep up with sustainable companies because of your reluctance to embrace sustainability, your company may be in jeopardy in the future.

The only thing that never changes is that everything keeps changing. Sustainability is the buzzword of the business world for another decade max, until someone sees something else more beneficial. (I am not smart enough to even have a clue as to what that will be. 🙄) But smarter brains than mine are already working on it.
As for climate change, it is undeniably real, just from anecdotal experience. As a child winters were definitely more severe than today’s and rains that used to last a week at a time have turned into “spits” of rain and drought.
But the CAUSE is up for grabs. People are using the changing climate to push political and social agendas that will not have an iota of effect, even if they got all their ‘wish-list’ of regulations and government controls.

Homeworking seems to me one the most sustainable solutions. Less commuting and transport. Un-duplicating office and home space. Amongst other things.
One step ahead: Redesign empty office space into affordable housing. No addtional heavy construction, just remodeling. Drive the price of land down.

Good wisdom actually. Housing is a big problem whether it is due to affordability or space. Many times people are driven to live outskirts and commute hours to get to work which defeats productivity.
