You know, I have a lot of respect for SAHM (for those who don’t know SAHM stands for Stay At Home Mum) because of the sacrifices they chose to make for the sake of their children over their dreams. Hence when I came across my reader Lisa V who wrote that she wants to return to the workforce, I am so happy for her and applauded the brave step that she is going to take, re-entering into the career world. Below is the article she wrote, let’s give some love and encouragement to everyone and anyone who dare to take their first step out there.
After 13 years as a Stay-at-Home-Mom, I’m ready to go back into the workforce, and like many of us, it’s a bit overwhelming. And reading online job postings only intimidates me further. I realized that my “qualifications” may not be able to compete with the current millennials filling out the same applications that I was. So it got me thinking: What sets me apart from the other applicants?
If I had to come up with a skill that you wouldn’t normally see on a resume, what would it be?
In other words, what are my REAL skills, the ones that make me who I am?
Forget, for a moment, about the potential employer. Forget about fitting into their box.
What would be on my “functional” resume?
Below is my tongue-and-cheek answer to the cover letter that I would LIKE to send to companies.
To whom it may concern;
I am seeking employment with (insert company name here). As the gaping hole in my resume indicates, I have been a stay-at-home-mom for the past thirteen years. I have successfully kept two children and a husband alive and thriving under my supervision and care.
I excel in the areas of community organization, administrative management, scheduling, dispute reconciliation, negotiation, research analysis, data entry, and product delivery.
I have been instrumental in project management, assuring that projects are completed on time, and often, ahead of schedule. I am able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
I am willing to go above and beyond my job description when necessary, and overtime doesn’t faze me.
My can-do spirit and willingness to learn would be a great asset to your company. I am a hard worker and a quick learner. Given the right tools, I am confident I could tackle any new concepts that come my way. And if the right tools aren’t available, I will make my own.
I am prompt and dependable and comfortable with being a leader as well as a team player, and I am familiar with determining which is most necessary to complete the task at hand.
Sick time is rarely necessary, however I do insist on scheduled coffee breaks.
I am not squeamish and have a basic understanding of first aid.
As my references will attest, I have a strong work ethic, a commitment to excellence, as well as being courteous and respectful.
I have been a manager to many, and equipped them with the necessary tools they need to thrive. Those under my supervision are also courteous and respectful. If they are not, they will be dealt with quickly.
