Learn How to Delegate Work to Your Team

When facing multiple projects and deadlines, delegating the work is the best solution. You will lighten your workload considerably, know the best people for certain types of tasks, improve one’s skills and career and build trust.

However, delegating work is not easy and will require you to accept that you need help to finish the tasks at hand. You will also need to let other people show what they are made of and give them a chance to succeed.

If you find it hard to delegate work to your team, here are some great tips to help you get started:

Know Which Tasks Can Be Delegated

When delegating work to others, you first need to know which tasks should be delegated.  Tasks vary in their costs, skill requirements and activities needed to complete them.

Consider what the tasks entails and if you can do it. If you cannot do it yourself and there are a lot of tasks needed to complete the entire project, you should delegate it.

Know Who Fits The Task And Do It Better

While taking note of the tasks that need to be delegated, you should also consider who fits the job well. Delegating tasks is hard to do because delegators do not know who works well for specific tasks and get them delivered on time.

If you want to know who works well for the task, look into their past performance and academic credentials. When you consider their records, you need to ensure that you do not settle for just satisfactory results.

You need to pick someone who can do the high quality and on time. If you are going to assign someone a task for the first time, be realistic about the job quality they will present.

Give The Right Instructions

If you want your delegated tasks to succeed, you need to ensure they have the proper instructions. Explain your instructions carefully and provide examples in case some steps are confusing.

Set A Deadline

Make sure to set a deadline and timeline for the task’s completion. Tell the person you are delegating the task to that you expect regular updates about the task, and you will do periodic inspections. Should there be any delays or questions, let them know you can assist.

Say Thank You

When the person you assigned to a task is finished, don’t forget to thank them and give them good feedback. When you do this, you give them ideas on where they can improve, instil loyalty and help them feel appreciated by the team.

Learning how to delegate work can help improve your relationship with your teammates and boost your productivity. While it is ok to have a little bit of fear when delegating, you should give your team a chance to prove your fears wrong. With a bit of practice, you will help your team flourish.

  3. The ‘give the right instructions’, is I think the reason many don’t delegate. Thinking to be quicker doing it themselves compared to taking the time to explain what needs to be done. At least, that is how it was for me and I know my hubby ‘suffers’ from the same thoughts, haha
