Is March The Start of New Beginnings?

Hello MMers,

If you wonder who are MMers, then you probably missed my Chinese New Year post here.

March is usually the best month to quit your horrible job (in Asian context anyways). Why? People usually will sit out and wait for their year-end bonus and of course, the much-anticipated company party. That will mean they will tender their letters in January.

However, in the Asian context especially if you are working in a Chinese company, your boss will only pay out the bonus before the Lunar New Year, and the company dinner will only happen on the day employees returned to work. Sometimes on the 7th day of Chinese New Year as traditionally known as 人日 (birth of human aka all mankind birthday). During the Chinese New Year, bosses are incredibly generous so employees can expect an additional bonus in the form of Ang Pao (red envelopes with cash in it).

For the above reasons, nobody will leave their jobs in January or February (Chinese New Year usually falls in February).

However, in March, when there aren’t any festive holidays to bring in joy and eager anticipation of long holidays, the dreaded feelings of your lousy job slowly seeped back into your life. That is when some will start to consider their options and even hand out their resignations.

Old familiar faces will be gone by the end of March while fresh new faces will be arriving in April. Due to this movement in the job market, March is the best time to search for new beginnings as HR and recruiters hurriedly try to fill up the position so there will be a significant overlapping period with the old and new employees a proper handover.

So if you are sniffing around for a better job, don’t wait out too long. In anticipation of this move, I did four different cover letters posts with free templates so that you can use them for references. As some normalcy is back in our lives due to the vaccination program rolling out in many countries, more businesses will start filling up previous retrenched positions.

You know what? 5th of March is Employee Appreciation Day, so if you are a business owner and if you have employees, time to show some love and care during this challenging period. I recently met a few entrepreneurs, and I asked a simple question that stumped all of them. My question was, “How well do you know your staff?” Go beyond their working habits and what they like for lunch. Do you know if they are happy and fulfilled in their roles? When was the last time they had a break and what did they do during their break? How many children do they have and what are their names?

So if you don’t know the answers, it’s time to make an effort to genuinely understand the people who are slogging for you every single day. If you don’t, someone else will. In the end, your company will be bleeding talents to your competitors.

That’s all from me today. I’ll catch up with you again in April. Until then, keep laughing and stay awesome!

Hi, Kally. I always appreciate your thoughtful blogs (i.e. blogs that are full of a lot of thought! 😉).
Just musing amusingly, and wondering if Asians don’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th? Here in the US, we say “Everyone is Irish on St. Paddy’s Day.”

Asians don’t really celebrate St. Patrick’s Day since it is not really our holiday or traditions. 🙂 Thank you for letting me inspire you!

  9. Interesting! I had no idea how the Lunar New Year impacted the workplace in many Asian countries. I wonder if there are similar tides in other regions.

Culturally interesting and inspiring, Kally! As a March-born individual, I always find this month extra enlivening — regardless of what is going on in the world. The return of Spring (I am in the US) and the lengthening of days are the birthday gifts that I look forward to most.
