Whether I’m furiously working at my desk at a corporate job or I’m putting up my feet at my freelancing one, there’s no denial that I appreciate little thoughts from others and those kindness can really brighten my day.

I have collected a basket of kindness that affects people around me and share their stories and what little things made them smile and perk them at work.

I have been in my job for 2 years and I have never really spoke to this colleague who is sitting at the far corner. No excuse because my company is only made up of 30 people.

But one day, he saw that I was having a really bad day. I was yelled by my boss and I really didn’t think I deserved that kind of treatment so I was on the verge of tears. This colleague, quietly left a cupcake and a note on my table when I was out for lunch to cheer me up.

Ann, Auditor

My one year old son was sick, he vomited on his classmate and his teacher called me up to pick him up from school.

I had an important meeting that I really need to attend in the afternoon and there is no way I can rush to pick him up and come back in time for the meeting. My wife happened to be out of town that week.

Another manager heard about my situation, offered to take over my place in the meeting and promised to fill me in via mobile right after the meeting. You couldn’t imagine my relief that someone offer to help out!

I was pretty new at freelancing when this client decided that he likes my attitude and offered to coach me on his new systems. He even allow me to clock in time while I was learning under him. For given me a kickstart in my freelancing career, I’ll never forget his kindness even though I am no longer working with him.

I was driving to another town for an important meeting with a big client. Our year end profits depend on whether we clinch this deal. So this is a pretty major contract.

My car broke down 2 hours away from our company and although I called the mechanics, they could only send assistance a few hours later. One of my co-workers was on the phone with me when my car broke down, offer to come and get me, loan me his car and waited by my car for the mechanics to arrive.

I did close the deal at the end of the day, all thanks to Paul for going his way out to save our company!

I’m a night time janitor at a high school. I always arrived for work long after the students have left. Recently, I have been taken time off as I was grieving for my son’s death. Someone must have told some of the students because when I report to work, I found a nice card with a teddy bear addressed to me.

In the card was full of well wishes and whole lot of students signed off. This little gesture touched me so much that I couldn’t stop crying that night. Luckily there was no one who saw me.

I remembered when I was just two months into my first job, someone did something nice for me. I was about to pack up and go home when my manager held me back for an error in my accounts.

My colleague offer to stay back and help me to rectify the error together, which cut short the time I’ll have to do it myself alone. Now, I always try to stay back to help anyone in need. Together as a team, you work faster and produce more.

My boss is the kindest I have never worked with. Although he is seldom around in the office (due to business traveling), he always remembers everyone’s birthday. He will always send a personal email to the staff on their birthdays.

Last October, I had to travel with him to an exhibition. During that travel week, my birthday was on Tuesday. He ordered a cake to be delivered to my hotel room together with a spa voucher and a note to say I’m entitled an off day for working so hard. I was very touched by his gesture.

My ex-manager ordered me home and had one of my ex-colleagues drove me back on the first day, I returned to work after a brief absence from my miscarriage. He came around my place with a bag full of groceries and told me that he has granted me another week of leave so I can recuperate properly. He even stayed long enough for my partner to arrive home so that I won’t be home alone.

There are many ways to perk up someone’s day. I used to have a co-worker that will leave the cupcakes and cookies she baked on everyone’s table during lunch. It’s really a great mid-day perk-me-up and something to look forward to every day. We missed her badly when she had to quit her job because she had to moved back to her home country.

I’ll always remember old Sam, our office building doorman. He always have nice things to say, always super positive. He brings us umbrellas on rainy days, recommends the best restaurants in the area and always help to call us our cabs.

When he retired, we threw him one of the biggest farewell parties our company ever had!

I was in charge overseeing a particular event but on the event day, I was feeling very sick. I had to pull myself off the bed and kept vomiting in the cab, all the way to the event venue.

Susie, my assistant saw my condition, sent me straight to the doctor’s and step up into my role. She was the first person (besides my husband) I shared the happy news when I came back straight from the doctor’s back to work. I was pregnant after 5 years of trying!
