Review: Grammarly.com

Whether you are a student, a writer, a blogger even in your professional life, wouldn’t it be great to have your written work scan through by someone first before you submit? That is why great editors are often expensive and highly sought after. Even when I was in the workforce, many of my peers would love to seek another’s opinion before handing out that important business proposal to the client or click that ‘Send’ button on that particular email to our boss.

As mentioned in many of my articles before, it is important to make use of the available online tools to help you advance your skills and your career. One of those tools that I advocate and have been using it myself is Grammarly.com. I have tried other online spelling and grammar tools and Word doc spell check as well, nothing come close to Grammarly.com. The best part? They do have a free version here!

The generous and kind folks at Grammarly.com have gifted MiddleMe a premium trial version so I show you what this advanced tool can do.

First of all, for those who have been using the free version of Grammarly.com will know that this tool corrects your tenses, spelling and your punctuations up to 150 critical mistakes. For those who are keen to try out, it is simple: Go to grammarly.com to add Grammarly to your browser. As you go about responding to emails, drafting blog posts, or commenting on articles, Grammarly gently underlines words or phrases that don’t look quite right. You can use in with your Mailbox, Gmail, Word docs even in WordPress. It is smart too, as it learns your preferences and provides you with a weekly email on your performance. That way you will understand better on your writing style and improve your progress in writing.

The score at the bottom right corner grades your article against your mistakes. I always aim to achieve at least 90 for each article on my own before checking against Grammarly.com, so I can improve my writing.

For the premium version, there are vast differences and benefits like:
– Advanced grammar and spell checks
– Sentence Structures and Vocabulary enhancement suggestions (I really love this feature!)
– Genre-specific writing style checks
– Plagiarism detector (super useful when it comes to hiring freelancing writers for my clients!)

I have tried the premium version myself with MiddleMe and LadyRedot published articles, and I shall showcase some of the features that are described above.

Passive Voice

The above is an article taken from LadyRedot about Taiwan. It is yellow underlined to let me know that my sentence is in a passive voice. If you expand the little box, it will provide you with reason and examples.

Repetitive Word

On the same article, the premium version of Grammarly.com highlighted that I have been using the same word once too often. I love it that the tool doesn’t just tell you your mistake but provides you with possible replacement words for your selection.

Weak Adjectives

Same goes for weak adjectives. This will allow me to improve myself as a writer.

Better Word Pair

Another of my top favourite is this feature. Not everyone can come up with the most suitable vocabulary, and it really helps to have suggestions like the one below, especially if you are burning the midnight oil, trying to meet your deadline!

Faulty Parallelism

Correcting your sentence structure to make sure it make sense to your readers is like having another person proofreading your article before you submit your thesis to your lecturer.

These are the top 5 favourites of mine in the premium version of Grammarly.com. I am confident that there are a lot more features I have not discover yet and will be surprise and delight by the tool once it learns more about my writing style and habits.

If you want to improve your writing and perhaps be a top earning freelance writer in the market, Grammarly.com can help you in so many ways just like it is helping me. Go on, download the free version and let me know if it has helped you.

  7. This is a very interesting read. A program like this certainly might come in handy. also, or perhaps especially, for a non-native English speaker/writer. I do think one needs to be careful with the suggestions the program does though. A private park is realy different from an isolated park. And if a spring is hot, it’s hot and not warm. Also: creativity should not be stifled by what the programmer thinks is ‘good’ language. But hey, I don’t have to go tell you this 🙂

    1. Kally says:

Totally agree with you. After all, a tool doesn’t replace the creativity and one shouldn’t just take any suggestion by the program blindly. I rather read a bad grammar but meaningful article than an uninteresting poor content but proper post.
