How Downtime Fuels Productivity and Creativity

Sometimes, the best ideas come in the least expected times. It could be when we are in the middle of our bath or with family. Unfortunately, we can’t focus on these moments because we are focused on staying productive and not taking the time to look into these ideas and see how we can proceed. We also do not take time to recharge before proceeding to the next step.

It is important to remember that our brains and bodies need to recharge and recover for us to focus properly, stay productive and be creative. This is why breaks or downtime are critical, whether for work or personal life. Once the brain is fully rested, we become more creative and better able to deal with many challenges.

If you are having trouble catching up on your downtime, here are several tips to boost your productivity and creativity.

Take Breaks and Wander

Whether you have a small task or a large project, it is best to take breaks so your mind can recharge and relax. When you take these breaks, make sure to avoid any additional tasks, put your phone or PC on silent and focus on yourself. You can also use the time to take a walk outside your office and think of other things that catch your attention.

If going outside is not possible, you can turn off your PC for a bit and close your eyes to catch your breath. Your break could be as short as five minutes, and it will be enough to get everything sorted out. If you need extra help to concentrate, don’t hesitate to use meditation apps like Headspace.

No matter what you do during your breaks, make sure to tell your team that you are taking a break. This will ensure that they give you space and not ask you to look into work while you take that break.

Add Offline Time to Your Schedule

It can be very easy to be distracted by your mobile devices and social media. Whether it is checking what is latest in social media or simply doing it out of a habit, you can spend hours on it without stopping. Sometimes, you won’t even realise you already lost a lot of time just by browsing.

You can schedule offline times in your calendar to do something else besides work. It could be doing activities with your family, friends, or yourself, such as taking trips to different cities, hiking, baking, cooking, gardening, and more. You can even take the time to do something new during this downtime, so long as it does not require you to go online to recharge your mind.

Having a time where you can disconnect from the world for just a bit, an hour or after your work, to do something offline. It could be playing a board game with your family, reading a book or so on. If you can, take vacation time to disconnect from the online world for a while. When you do these activities, remember not to check in with work, as it defeats the purpose of your downtime. Relax and focus on the task at hand.

Use Apps

You can also use apps designed to help you relax, streamline time-consuming activities, and stay creative in the process. For example, you can use tools like Gemini for Google Workspace to automate repetitive tasks, reducing the time you spend on them and allowing you to focus on something else. Apple’s Screen Time and Android’s Digital Wellbeing can notify you when you exceed your screen time allotment for certain apps and let you adjust when you get notifications during key periods.

When you do use these apps, make sure to limit them to a single specific purpose. This ensures that you don’t have to pay additional subscription fees or create numerous accounts, which can only cause you stress. There are also free apps you can use to help with this, so there is no need for paid apps or subscriptions. Taking the time to relax and have a little downtime from your busy work life can help you explore ideas that you never thought of before. You will also be able to create new things and improve the work you produce each day. You may even be surprised by how simple solutions can help with complex challenges you may not have considered before, when you were panicking and not stopping to think. So, the next time you feel like you can’t think, take a break. You’d be surprised how many ideas you can come up with with just a short break, helping you recover.
