3 Ways to Overcome Writer’s Block

Whether you are writing a simple message or a report, it can be a challenge to write it perfectly or start it at all. Aside from writing, the task becomes impossible to complete if you add in the other things you have to do.

If you are experiencing writer’s block or have problems writing, here are 3 ways to overcome it.

Prepare

Some people find it hard to write anything because their workspace isn’t conducive to writing. Whether you are writing at your desk at home or the office, please make the necessary changes to make it the workspace you want it to be. Declutter your desk, remove any distractions, or add a picture of something that can inspire you.

It is also best to know when you are productive and what conditions you find it easier to focus on. If you are a night owl, write at night. If you don’t like to be seated constantly, write while standing up. You can also put on your favourite music or have a cup of tea beside you if it can help you focus on writing.

Practice

You can also try scheduling a writing practice to help you get into the right mindset to write. You can note whatever is in your mind and slowly organize these ideas into a piece. It doesn’t have to be something about work or be a perfect piece. To practice certain writing styles, check a list of writing prompts online and practice.

It is also important that your writing practice is done regularly and that you do it even if you are not in the mood to write. You will slowly get used to writing as you practice and not fear it. You should look back on your practice pieces and try to improve them if you can.

Read

You can read to help you get past your writer’s block. People often find it hard to write something because they are not familiar with the topic being discussed. Others may be uncertain about what to write because they are unfamiliar with the writing style used in the passage or question before them. By reading, you will be able to learn more about these topics and discover other styles of writing that you may not be familiar with.

Reading can also help you pick up techniques for writing specific ideas and inspire you for your next piece. You may even find the writing style for certain pieces you may be asked to write in the future.

Writing a masterpiece isn’t something you can do overnight. But you can work your way into writing one if you do your best to overcome any challenges that go your way. Whether it is writer’s block or you are not in the mood to write, try the three methods listed above to help you get started. You will be surprised how fulfilling writing is, and you can discover something new about yourself.

  3. Learning to type is also very helpsome. Things go way faster then correcting typo’s al the time.

Kally, I find that reading and commenting on other’s blogs is helpful – which I guess is both “reading” and “practicing.” Sometimes I find myself prompted by a piece to leave a comment that presents my position on an issue in a well-thought-out statement. When proofreading it, I often find I like it enough to copy it and put it in my drafts, where it might be a future post.
