Mid-life Crisis: Finding Purposes in Your Work

Are you currently considering your career options even though you are still employed? You may be experiencing a midlife crisis.

A midlife crisis occurs when you find yourself asking if it is time to make a career change, and you no longer feel like you are having fun in your current work. For some, this time can be hard to take because of the uncertainty a career change can bring to them. However, some can overcome this crisis and become more accomplished in their chosen field.

If you want to refocus your mind and find the purpose you need to overcome this crisis, here are some ways you can do it:

Know Your Worth

It can be easy to forget many things in a midlife crisis, especially your current career. You may ask yourself if you did a good job and what missed opportunities you have.

Take this time to review your career so far and see where you want to improve, as well as what experiences will be critical to your goals. You can also write down your experience and accomplishments to strengthen your resolve and see that you have achieved a lot already.

Assess Your Current Standing

Each person experiences a midlife crisis differently, as some experience it when they feel like they hit the limit of their present position. Others may even have different priorities, which vary significantly from the time they started their career.

Try to spend time reviewing your needs and your current work status. Are you still satisfied with your current career? Are there people you tend to compare yourself to whenever you go to work? You can consider your next career move when you have the answer to this question.

Ask For Help

Whether you are in your workplace or at home, someone in the group has experienced a midlife crisis before. If you find it hard to deal with it yourself, don’t hesitate to ask for their help. They may be able to help you understand what you are going through and identify which path you can take next.

Take A Break

Overthinking about something can get tiring and derail you from focusing on anything else. Give yourself a brief break and do something different. It will allow you to recalibrate your mind and reconnect with your passions, which you may have neglected before.

Understand The Pros And Cons

After a break or assessment of your current situation, list the pros and cons of switching careers and staying in your current one. Assess the lists carefully to see if they match your needs and goals.

Stay Professional

If you see that a career shift or change should happen, ensure you do not burn bridges with your employer and leave once everything is turned over and sorted. Politely explain why you are resigning and thank them for their guidance when you worked for them.

Don’t think it is all over for you and your career when you find yourself in a midlife crisis. This is a normal part of a working person’s life, and it is an excellent time to pause and see what options are available for you. There is no right or wrong answer when you find yourself in a midlife crisis, but you can take steps to help you find purpose in your work regardless of your decision.
