4 Tips For Finding a Work-Life Balance

More and more parents are struggling to find a balance between family and work life. It can be a slippery slope depending on what your profession is. However, having a family means that you need to be able to nurture your relationships with your kids and your partner. The great news is that you can have both. It’s possible to be totally committed to your career and your family. Take a look at the following tips for balancing your job and family life.

Occasionally Delegate

Sometimes you may not have enough time to do it all, and that’s okay. In some situations, you may have to learn to delegate. For example, if you can’t make one of your child’s sporting events or school concerts, make sure that the other parent can. The next time there is an event one of you needs to attend, make sure it’s you. It’s all about planning ahead.

If you work late and aren’t there to help your child with their homework, it’s okay to hire a tutor to give them a hand a few days a week. The most important is that you’re making sure your family is looked after even in your absence.

Be Present

It’s important that when you’re at work, you’re totally focused on work, and the same goes for when you’re at home. When you’re spending time with your family, make sure that you’re not looking at your work emails, or focusing your energy on anything outside of the present moment with your kids and spouse. Many families find great success making it a rule to ban cell phones during family time, or while eating dinner. Unplugging as a family can help you cherish the special moments that you have when they are less frequent than you would like them to be.

Give To Yourself

Some parents are so busy trying to find a balance between work and family, that they forget to also find time for themselves. If you’re burned out you won’t be much good at work or taking care of your family, so make sure that you practice self-care. This may mean going for a run, taking a bubble bath, or even just watching a show you like to unwind. The idea is to give back to yourself and not only others. It’s alright to be a little selfish sometimes— especially if you work so hard during the week.

Make a Schedule

Just like you schedule important meetings for work, you should also schedule valuable family time.  You would never miss an important work meeting, so why would you miss something you scheduled with your family? Make sure that you treat each with the same priority.

  3. Thank you. These types of articles are very common, but your sub-headings say it all: occasionally delegate, be present, give to yourself, make a schedule. How am I incorporating one, if any of these today? For example, can’t I check emails another time? Thanks again!

Fantastic, Kally! This needs to be plastered on billboards, announced as a PSA before every movie, posted in every office!

Never thought about “struggling.” My strategy is that you can do almost anything with a schedule. For 10 years I had growing up kids, a daily walk, and grad study, and after that an involved job, with a commuting husband. Family guests from overseas were also included. Cell phones are only to call people, and social media, when you have time and feel like it, after 10 pm.

It is related to my latest blog. I do feel I am doing a lot less in life now specially making money but I am happier and less stress more time with the family and lots of travels on a budget even inside our country before we went into lockdown 2 weeks ago.
