Regardless whether you are a freelancer, an entrepreneur or an employee, this article is for you. Especially if you are thinking of switching a role between the three. Today we explore why working for yourself deserved a much bigger recognition than an employee of a company.
Financial Risk
When you work for yourself, there’s no guarantee you get work on a daily basis. Heck, you might even need to dig into your savings or emergency funds for the first few months. Unlike working in a company where you can expect a stable income at the end of the month. Financial stability means a lot to most people and may be a huge difference when there are other financial commitments.
Difficulty in First Steps
When you are working in a company, everything is all set up for you. Basically, you are just following precedence rules and procedures unlike when you set up your own freelancing profile or a new startup. It’s pretty overwhelming not knowing where to start because there are so many things to do, all at the same time!
Perseverance
It is super easy to just give up every time you hit an obstacle when you are working for yourself since the only person answerable to you is yourself. While working for a boss means you reporting to someone else and also means that you can approach resources to get help when you need one. To sustain perseverance, one great way is to set tiny milestones for yourself and reward yourself as you hit each one.
Block the Haters
Haters will always be there, but as you set up to work for yourself, you’ll find more haters are coming out of the woods gaming for you. Maybe it spurred from jealous or purely come out of concern for you, there are bound to be negativity comments (even when the advice are meant to help you). Listen and take in on those advice applicable to you and your work. Avoid sounding defensive and irrational. And if you don’t like what you are hearing, just walk away.
Take it Personally
Self-doubt will always be there no matter how successful you are as an individual. Every feedback from a client or even from a friend who meant well, whether it is a compliment or a critique, it can lift your confidence or crush your spirit. And this can affect the work you produce. This is more evident when you are working for yourself as your work is your brand.
