At some point in your work life, there will come a time when you will find yourself at a crossroads regarding the next step in your career. You end up in this situation for many reasons, from finding new opportunities to grow in other firms and learning about different industries that catch your interest to uncertainty brought by the changing global market.

No matter your situation, it can be very tempting to make a career shift, especially if your current position is at risk. But, even if it sounds good, it may not be the right moment to make the change. So, what should you do?

Here are 5 questions you should ask yourself before making your next career move:

Am I Fulfilled In My Current Position?

Even if the job you are currently in is your dream job, it is possible that you may no longer feel happy in your position after a few weeks or months in the job. It is not wrong to admit this because people change as they immerse themselves in the job for a certain amount of time.

If you don’t feel happy anymore, it may be the time to look at your options and help your mental health to recover at the same time once you make a move.

Am I Learning New Things And Growing As An Individual?

Learning makes people feel accomplished since they can now do things they never thought of before. At work, there should be opportunities for you to learn more about your current position and gain the proper credentials to qualify for a promotion. These opportunities should also help you learn more about yourself and grow as an individual.

However, checking a new career may not be a bad option if it is not available in your current work and you see that you are held back.

Do I Have The Right Relationships To Lean On?

For a person to succeed in any career, they must have strong relationships with their colleagues, current bosses and experts in the field. These relationships can help you achieve your goals since they can provide advice and access to connections who can help out. Without these relationships, it can be difficult to find career opportunities you can move to once you decide to move out of your current career.

What Is My Current Job Outlook?

During the pandemic and the global financial crisis, some industries took the brunt of its impacts. Although these industries are now recovering or have recovered, there is still uncertainty if they can still stand firm if another pandemic or financial crisis sweeps the globe. To know your job outlook, check what your company is doing to adapt to the changing situation and if it can still withstand another pandemic or financial crisis. If you see that staying because of the company’s policies or the existing economic situation is no longer viable, then moving is the right choice.

Is The Move Going To Help Me With My Career Goals And Plan?

It is essential to ask yourself if moving will help you with your existing goals and put you on the right path to the career you want. You don’t want to make a move if you think a new position will only cost you time and money rather than help you move forward. Set a career plan for yourself before getting a job and once you find yourself at this crossroads, look at it as a guide.

Making a move to a different career is a choice that one should not make lightly because of how it can impact your entire life. Even if your answers push you into making a move, you need to make sure you are ready to do it despite the challenges you may face during the move. Take your time to see your options and know if it is the right time to make a move. If you feel it is the right time to move, own your decision, and if it isn’t the time, don’t force yourself. The right opportunity will come, and when it comes, your decision will help you achieve the goals you want to accomplish for yourself and your career.

  1. The one question I normally ask myself before a career move is ‘Why the hell am I still here?’
Well, two questions. The second is ‘Will the resignation letter be polite this time, or will I let them know what I really think of them?’ The first option is safe, the second is satisfying.
