Are you at the point in your career where you want to quit your current job but can’t let go of your position? Are you at the point where you tend to question why you are still there?
If this is your situation right now, your indecisiveness stems from finding leaving hard to consider. But why exactly do you feel that way? Here are several reasons why you may find it hard to quit your job even if it doesn’t fit you:
It’s Me Who Is The Problem
One reason you may find it hard to leave the job is that your behaviour is causing these conflicting thoughts. Some may feel that it’s their responsibility to help out because they believe it’s their fault everything is falling apart. Others even wish they were blamed because they think it’s their fault something bad is happening.
Positive Thinking Can Help
You may also find it hard to leave because you believe that these negative thoughts will go away after the project. Or it will go away after you speak to your boss. While positive thinking can indeed help motivate you in the short term, it will just hurt you in the long term if there is no change to your environment or performance. You are essentially betraying yourself by staying in an environment that undermines your self-belief and what you see around you.
Quitting Is For Losers!
Many of us do not want to admit defeat because it means accepting failure. Some of us even get to the point where we are used to the pain it brings and believe that this pain and sacrifice are enough to motivate us to success. However, if you keep at it, you will only undermine your values and become a martyr. If you want to build a successful career, you have to be able to admit defeat and walk away.
It’s Normal
Another reason you may find it hard to leave your job, even when it’s time, is that you’ve grown used to the discomfort and see it as usual. Many would even say to you that the stress you are feeling is everyday and that there is no such thing as a perfect job. If this is your state, you basically can’t see yourself in another job because you’ll immediately think that any other job is not worth it.
You Don’t Want To Experience Another Bad Ending
Have you ever taken a job that took a bit of time to get, or one that ended badly? If you do, you may be unconsciously trying to avoid similar occurrences. That’s why you are not someone who takes risks very often or makes the first move in the process.
No matter the situation, if you feel it’s time to leave your career but you can’t, it’s okay to feel uncertain about the future or what it means. It is also okay to feel like it is hard to leave the work when you have done it for so long. But if you suppress it, you may find yourself stuck in place and unable to move forward. So, when you feel that your career wants you to take it elsewhere, listen to it and take small steps so it won’t be as scary as you think.
