Ransomware Attacks: Tips For Protecting Your Freelance Business

As many businesses transition online to stay competitive in today’s digital age, cyberattacks against them have also increased. The most notable cyberattacks towards these businesses, especially small businesses and freelancers, are ransomware attacks.

Ransomware attacks lock businesses out of accessing their crucial documents, content, and databases. If these businesses wish to reaccess these files, they will have to pay the “ransom” to the cybercriminals who attacked them. Should they pay, they will be given a public key that will unlock the data. If they do not pay the ransom, they will never be able to get their content back unless they pay specialists who can do it for them.

For freelancers, both new and established, the thought of hiring a specialist or paying a ransom can be daunting. However, there are affordable and effective ways to protect your freelance business and reduce its impact. Here are some practical tips that can empower you to take control of your business’s security.

Use 2FA/3FA

Most ransomware attacks are due to compromised passwords. You can strengthen your business password by using 2 or 3-factor authentication. Once it is active, people will be required to input more than just their password to get access to their files. They will need to have the proper hardware and biometrics. Without one or both of these factors authenticated, it doesn’t matter if they have your business’s password.

Have a Ransomware Response Plan

It also pays to have a ransomware response plan that will help you navigate through each potential ransomware scenario that you may find yourself in. The plan should include steps to assess the damage from the attack, isolate the affected parts, and identify avenues for data restoration. Having a plan reduces the time your business is paralysed due to the attack and the amount of data you will lose due to it.

Keep Your Details And System Updated

Regular updates are a proactive measure that can significantly reduce the risk of cyberattacks. Always take the time to update your details and systems, especially your anti-virus and vulnerability programs. This not only keeps your systems secure but also helps identify areas where you need to strengthen your protection. By staying ahead of potential threats, you can ensure your business is not a prime target for cyberattackers.

Always Have a Backup Ready

Having backups and regularly updating them is also a great way to protect your freelance business. You can back up your data using cloud backups, physical backups or through off-site backups. Make sure to use more than one backup and keep it up-to-date in case one fails to update.

As freelancers, we need to ensure our business is protected from all security risks. Ransomware attacks, in particular, can leave both you and your clients at risk if you are not careful. This is why you need to be vigilant and enact the right plan to prevent these attacks from ever happening in the first place, or know how to deal with them effectively. It is never too late to change your strategy moving forward against these threats.
