6 Secrets for Searching for a Job During a Recession

The current economic crisis and the natural events that have besieged the world for the past couple of months has definitely made job hunting very tricky for a lot of people. No matter where you turn, there are many people especially graduates currently unemployed and unable to get a job.

If you are one of these people who are desperately looking for a job in these trying times, how can you make yourself more appealing to companies? To help you out, here are 6 secrets to help you get a job during a recession:

#1 Know your targets

All of us have a dream workplace we covet to work for or an industry we want to join in. When doing a job search, always check these workplaces or industries and ask around if there is an opening even if there’s no posting about it.

Always build your network. You may not know someone working in your dream industry or company but that doesn’t mean friends around you do not know that “someone” too.

#2 Check openings at growth industries

Although there are industries which are suffering because of the recession, there will be certain industries that are not affected by the climate. These growth industries will definitely have openings available to keep up with the demand for their products and services during this situation.

Research online which of these growth industries matches your preferences and search jobs on Jooble. Some of these industries will even continue onwards with their growth rate even after the recession.

#3 Consider freelancing gigs

Waiting for an interview call can take a while. While you wait, it is important that you still have an income to work on especially if your previous job was your only source of income. Freelancing not only provide the much needed income but also allow you to accumulate experiences.

There are a lot of freelancing jobs out there that can help you out while you are waiting for a call for a full-position.

#4 Promote yourself

When applying for a job, you definitely need to make sure your resume is spick and span to get the interest of the recruiters. However, don’t list every single detail about you because that may just turn them off.

If you want to get their attention, write your resume as if you are proposing the things you can offer if you get the job. Explain your specialties in detail and showcase how it can help you provide the results your employers want.

#5 Be flexible

Always remember that every industry varies when it comes to the job openings and competition. If your industry is already full or does not have any job openings available, you will have to consider moving to a new industry.

If it does happen, be ready to move to a different location and learn what is needed to succeed in the industry you will now join in.

#6 Stay Positive

You definitely need to stay positive when trying to find a job in this recession. Even if the odds look like it isn’t going up, you should stay positive that you will find a job. With some patience and positive thinking, you will definitely find that job you need.

Don’t stop trying. Always find ways to network. Most importantly, keep upgrading yourself.

During these tough times, finding a job can be very stressful. However, if you come with an open mind and prepare accordingly, you will be able to find a job. The right job will come for you and help you during the recession.

  5. My friend Kally, another AWESOME Post (no surprise there)

Two things sorta jumped out at me:

#1. Stay Positive (YOU ARE SELLING YOURSELF; so keep it in mind!)

#2. The Resume: Both in good and less-good times your Resume NEEDS to DIFFERNT…. Noticeable and memorable.
Consider these suggestions (which in my unretired life have “field tested”)
Make the paper you use different (but not) gaudy … Office supply store OFFER a wide variety with MATCHING envelope; which you should advantage

Then get away from the NOLRMAL formats; and go to a business letter format.

Hello (0r Hi) my name is ….. and I have researched (BE SURE THAT YOU HAVE) your company, and I would very much like to work for and with you.

Here are my qualifications. And I am open to any opportunity that promises advancement and growth potential….

Anyway that approach WILL get noticed.
And Pray (having God on your side is a HUGE +)

    Thanks Kally, way to go!
    God Be with Us,
    Patrick

  11. Thanks a lot for your advice. First of all, stay positive and try, try, try. But on #5 Be flexible… It’s not easy to go. If you’re not young enough and you have a family based in one place. Above all, during an interview, comes always the question : “Are you changing your field of interest? Why?” Obviously you cannot say “I’m working in Oil&Gas and now all is politically blocked, idiot.” Being flexible, being choosy, brings to you a lot of questions. Sometimes answers are not enough appreciated.
