Do you love playing with children and helping them learn? If the answer is yes, then perhaps you should be looking for a career in childcare! It can be a challenge working with kids since they have different personalities, but it is also a great way to make a difference in a child’s life.
If you are considering taking on the challenge, there are a lot of child-related jobs that you can try out.
Before you jump into these jobs, look at the prerequisites below and if you ticked pretty much most of the items listed below, you are good to go. If not, you may want to reconsider your career options.
- Patience
Truckloads of patience! There are bad days and there are really BAD days. Having a lot of patience really help you with children. Screaming at them to tie their shoelaces faster will not make them faster but in fact, may slow them down even more.
- Generosity
By nature, you should have a generous and giving nature. A lot of the children-related jobs doesn’t pay well and have very little benefits but if you can see past the money factor and prefer to be paid in snotty smiles, sweaty hugs and funny drawings, you are almost there.
- Creativity
Even as a Pediatrician, you need to be creative when working with children. Maybe you need to tell a story to distract them while giving them vaccinations. Or explain in a childlike manner why the child is feeling the way he is feeling because he didn’t want to take his medicine.
- Bursting Full of Energy
And sunshine. And glitter. And unicorns. I found it much easier to work with young children when I was a teen. Now reaching 40, I found my heart wanting but my body whining.
- Positivity
Basically, you are a happy person. You see the world with rainbow-coloured glasses. No parents will leave their kid with you if you are always looking grumpy and moody. In fact, parents will look grumpy and moody when they seek advice from you on how to handle Johnny’s tantrums and you will have to be the opposite, dishing out helpful and cheerful advice.
- Curiosity
This is not a crucial character trait if you want to work with children but it does make your work easier. With a sense of child-like curiosity, you explore the world with them and see things in new perspective through their eyes.
Here below are 10 jobs you can start with if you love to work with children:
Preschool Director
Want to build a great preschool environment for kids to flourish?
A preschool director is the one who creates the school policy, approves curriculum and ensures children have a safe learning environment.
If you love children but may have limited patience to be in a room the whole day with them, this job suits you better. You will be fighting for money with donators and investors, tackling heavy paperwork and training new teachers.
Nanny
Nannies are a godsend for working parents who don’t have time to watch over their kids.
Aside from watching over the kids, nannies can serve as a child’s tutor and protection when they are going out. Nannies also cook for their child, do their child’s laundry and play with them.
Align your expectations: nannies are like a stand-in mother with the exception of disciplinary actions (you may need to seek parental approval and work out a limitation what are the suitable disciplinary actions for their child).
Childcare Teacher
As a childcare teacher, you are helping children learn basic things and help them interact with other children.
Childcare teachers are in demand nowadays because this is the age when children are in their terrible twos and threes, the time they will explore whether parents like it or not.
Keep in mind that being a childcare teacher, you not only have to face your students but their parents as well.

Child portrait photographer
If you love taking photos and kids, you can begin a career as a child portrait photographer.
It can be difficult to get children to stay still for a photo. But, if you are able to do so and use your imagination to make the right shot, you will find it easy to succeed in the business.
This job is likely to be on a freelance basis however, if you do well, you may just be the next Anne Geddes. (I’m a fan of her work!)
Camp Director
In summer camps, children can explore more about the world and learn about the things they see and like.
As a camp director, you are the one responsible for ensuring that these kids can learn while having fun outside the classroom and ensure everything in the camp is running flawlessly.
Paediatrician
A paediatrician is the one in charge of a child’s health. They must be able to calm children down, who think that doctors are very scary, and make them look forward to their next visit.
A paediatrician is a noble job – he or she not only makes her patients healthy and happy but also calm the anxious parents’ nerves. I know, I’ve been there!

Child Party Entertainer
Do you find it easy to make people laugh with your unique talents? Why not start a career as a child party entertainer?
As a party entertainer, you can give children the best party there is with your brand of entertainment and fun.
Don’t think that a child party entertainer is just a clown or a magician. Nowadays, they come in all shapes and sizes. I know of someone who is a Disney Princess on weekends and a friend who loves her role as a mermaid at little girls’ birthday parties.
Art Therapist
Troubled kids find it difficult to talk about the things troubling them if they do not know how to do it.
As an art therapist, you will be able to provide a medium for these children to understand what they are feeling and cope.
Museum Educator
Museum educators are the ones who help children understand the exhibits in museums and ensure that the museum’s exhibits can catch their attention.
If you love history and children, this job is made for you!
Child Social Worker
This is one of the most emotion taxing jobs in the world.
Being a child social worker works for the betterment of children who are abused or neglected by their parents or their caretakers.
A child social worker must be able to understand these children and let them know that their life is important too.
Conclusion
No matter what job you select, there are a lot of benefits in working with children. It is definitely fulfilling as you see these kids flourish in your care. I do see myself going back to my first job as a childhood educator one day. Perhaps when my daughter attends primary school. Right now, I am enjoy imparting those skills by homeschooling my 3-year-old.
Never knew that a job that I was trained to do when I was 18 years old can be so useful one day!

Super weird😁, nobody called except HR and informed me that they are working from home and it will take time to finish the formalities online. I think they will create my code before this Friday, until then I’m free 😊

Do you think it’s too early to reopen the schools? Over in Malaysia, they haven’t open up the schools yet but they have open up the malls. I’m still wary in taking my little one to crowded public places.

I don’t think so. Children, up till now, seem to be rarely affected below the age of 12. Although I read the other day a scientific article, that a strange new illness has developed within children, that could be a result of the virus. So, I think its best to follow the provided rules from the experts, plus acknowledge your own emotions. Fear, worry, anxiety can cause stress, which is not healthy for anyone 😉

I agree that fear, worry and anxiety can make one go crazy especially with cabin fever. I’m still going to adopt the wait and see approach on kids going back to school. I’m homeschooling my little one so there’s no rush in getting her to attend her Friday play lessons just yet. 😊

NZ is best in getting a job or business about children. So many to choose from but it depends on your financial standing if you can afford a franchise whether in afterschool or daycare or a fairy godmother to every child’s birthday party.
