The Best Thing to Hold onto in Life is Each Other

Love is in the air again in February. Like the above title, I’m holding on tight to you, my readers by being appreciative and grateful for all the support you have shown me throughout these years.

Many of you have followed me since the start of MiddleMe and that’s a bloody long 5 years!

Shocking!

I can’t even follow a drama series that long. I binge-watched Game of Thrones after the final season is out so I don’t have to wait and endure the cruelty of suspense.

Valentine’s Day isn’t just about lovers. It’s about loving your cubicle neighbours too.

I remembered I used to have a really lovely colleague who would bring pink cupcakes on every Valentine’s Day. Last year, my husband bought red roses for all the female colleagues in his workplace (sorry, fellows!). My ex-boss bought lollipops for everyone in his department.

No, you don’t have to do it but it is a nice gesture, it brightens someone’s day and it makes you feel good.

So why not?

Before we forget, Valentine’s Day is also very commercial for businesses.

Focus is on how businesses will exploit this day. Restaurant prices are ridiculously high and not to mention tables are hard to book. Prices of flowers especially roses are exorbitant. Balloons, chocolates and teddy bears fly off the shelves.

In the midst of declaring whether you are for or against or remain nonchalant about Valentine’s Day, we are forgetting the ones who are putting in the hard work for us.

The service staff.

The ones who serve us our hot meals at the restaurants. The ones who helped to wrap our presents at the gifting counter. The ones who assisted our partners to choose the right gift (fuchsia and pink are two different colours, dear). The ones who stood for 8 hours plastered with a smile at the doorway of their stores.

It’s not only on Valentine’s Day. We just had Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year passed us by. These are the important holidays that the service staff had to miss out.

So instead of carving a turkey and drinking port wine or bringing flowers and cuddling their partners, they are working hard to put food on the table for their families. If you are out shopping or dining on this day, it wouldn’t hurt to smile and ask the person who is serving you how is his or her day.

How are you?

A simple question. That’s all it takes to bring a smile to the person serving you.

Service staff. Colleagues. Boss. Do something nice for someone else today.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all my readers. And thank you for returning to MiddleMe.

  1. That nice – ‘asking the staff how they are’. That should be the norm though, engaging with your waiting staff? I like to say hi and ask how they are. You obviously can’t keep them chatting as they’ve got a job to do. But I still agree with you — make someone’s day and ask how they are.

Thank you. And yes, asking how your team members are or your coworkers are, is basic courtesy and should be the norm. But not everyone practicing it. I like to take my time to say Hi too.

Happy Valentines Day!.. hope today, and all your tomorrows, are filled with love and happiness and life is all that you wish for it to be!!.. 🙂

May flowers always line your path
    and sunshine light your way,
    May songbirds serenade your
    every step along the way,
May a rainbow run beside you
in a sky that’s always blue,
And may happiness fill your heart
each day your whole life through.
May the sun shine all day long
Everything go right, nothing go wrong
May those you love bring love back to you
And may all the wishes you wish come true

Many of us tip our waiters or waitresses. Don’t forget the counter staff at places like Starbucks, Barnes and Noble cafes, ice cream parlors, at buffets.

  14. Actually, Kally, who’s created the more lasting gesture – those who have followed you for years, or you, who have kept things fascinating just as long?

I haven’t been here for years yet (more like months), but you’ve kept me coming back, while so many other bloggers have been overlooked.

How is it you’ve had an audience for years? Look in the morror!

  15. Very nice post indeed. I think there are two words that are very powerful: “thank you” and “please” Let’s include also “how are you”. This can be enough to open many doors and many hearts. Happy belated Valentine 🙂
