Start of a new month – August: I want to kickstart with an empowering article. Ever since I published an article on how to turned down a promotion, there were many enquires on how to get a promotion. As per popular request, here is my takeout on how to convince your boss that you deserve a promotion.
For many of us, we often start with jobs that we did not want at first. It could be a desk job or a low-paying job that you never applied for in the first place. While some would resign when they realize this fact, others would work their way through it and try to succeed in it as much as they could. Eventually, you have been working on the job for years now and thinking maybe it is time for a promotion.
However, promotion isn’t coming as fast as you want.
What is going on?
Promotion is not something companies give out on a whim, even to long working employees. They will evaluate your performance, your personality, and your contribution to the company before they consider you for a promotion.
Of course, there are ways to make the process faster. Here are some of the ways you can convince your boss its time you are given a promotion!
1. Be a leader
Since you have been in the position for a while, you know the ropes of the tasks better than others. When you are with a team, be confident and motivate your teammates to perform well. Help them with their work and lead them when necessary. Inspire others around you to think positive and to be innovative.
2. Make a difference
If you just work without a goal, you will not clinch that promotion you are after. Some people may even just ignore your efforts even if you have done well. Make yourself seen by people and make a good impression. Step up to be helpful even it is not within your job scope.
3. Understand the complex politics of the office
Office politics is a tricky business to love. However, if you are not aware on how it works, you may find yourself in a dangerous position that may cost you that promotion.
Build relationships and find out who has the power to help you get that promotion. Network right and you may find yourself among the right group who will consider you as peers. You should also observe how the office hierarchy change and how decisions are thought of and applied.
4. Get a sponsor
In some cases, it is possible that you just need a sponsor to get that promotion. They will serve as your mentors and get that promotion you want.
Sponsors can almost be anyone in the company. As you work, watch out for possible sponsors and slowly open channels to get their trust. A mentor will groom you and guide you to management position. In a lot of cases, a good mentor will put up glowing recommendations to management for those deserving promotion.
5. Keep calm and positive
Companies are after employees who can work under pressure and stay cool. You can also meet deadlines and solve issues when they occur. You are also not afraid to ask questions and keep clients happy.
I strongly believe that if you are positive, you bring about positive aura around you and in turn, attract good luck. Of course, when you are positive and happy, people tend to be drawn towards your energy and want to be near you all the time.
Really, nobody wants to be around a whiny negative person that will bring their mood down.
6. Show You Want that Promotion
Sometimes, you only need to show your interest that you are interested for a promotion to get it. Some managers (are also humans) may not be aware that you are after the promotion or didn’t think about you when considering who to promote.
The best time to put forth your intention is during your appraisal. You can ask your boss what are the areas you can improve on in order to move up in ranks.
Conclusion
Many people often believe that getting a promotion is very hard to achieve. However, if you show what you got to your employers and see that you are ready, they will see you as a serious candidate. Good luck!

Good article Kally. In my working life, I always said my job description only had one line….”Do whatever it takes.” I worked each day like that and the promotions were slow to come at first, but, in my 38 years with my last company, I went from entry level to Regional Manager, responsible for 4 provinces and 400 branches. It can be done, but the job should always come first in your mind, before you think of promotion. Allan

I would add that you have to be your own best advocate; nobody is going to pull as hard for you as yourself. If you have talent, don’t be sky about it. Toot your own horn a bit. I have often advertised that I am one of the best living lyricists. If it’s true, believe it and say it out loud!

Ah, yes, Horn Tooting. After a merger in 2000, our new boss advised us all to use this tactic. At first, I could not do it, but after 14 years, I could wax eloquent on my abilities and achievements. One of my oft repeated comments was “If you want to know how good I am, just ask me”! Good performance is a culture, but in the end, you better be able to back it up. Cheers

Self-proclaimed importance can work in a number of ways. In a presentation for promotion, there should be irrefutable empirical data to justify action. Bosses thrive on progress with the industry of others. Explore the “number of ways” before proceeding.

Good post. You have to be able to prove your worth and making a difference definitely helps. My friend was able to show through his hard work that he deserved a promotion and he got it and a huge increase in pay. Now, my mom, God rest her, was very timid and worked hard in her job before she got married. She worked for 5 years without a pay raise or promotion and didn’t say anything. You definitely have to make yourself noticed.
