How to Drive Traffic to Your New WordPress Site?

So you’ve decided to create a new WordPress website. No doubt that browsed many tutorials and guides on how to set it up properly (click here if you haven’t!) and now you’re wondering how to get it seen on the internet. Many of you have asked me how to make their blog popular or how to profit from your blog. If you are one of those who want to take your blog one step higher, do read on…

Sometimes, we write to bring a voice to certain subjects that we feel passionate about. Sometimes, we write our own thoughts but it will be very nice to have a side income generating from our words. And there are sometimes, we just want to set up a website where we can generate a regular steady stream of income so that we can invest our time in pursuing our passions.. (and maybe write about it too!)

If this is the case, you will need to drive in traffic to your website or else your content, no matter how interesting it is, will not be seen by the audience you want to reach.

So, how can you bring them to your site? Here are 9 quick tips to help you get started to drive traffic to your WordPress site:

#1 Create an Email List

It is a fact that a majority of your audiences won’t look back into your site once they finished reading the content they want to see in your site. To counter this, you can create an email list that would help you get these visitors back by directly market your content to them.

But do be careful with the email list. While we would love to receive updates about your articles every now and then, 3 emails in one day seem like spam. So be selectively on what and who you email to. Allow your audience to opt-in on the email list if they are interested. A forced relationship has no happiness.

#2 Boost Your Post’s Appeal

When writing your content on your blog, it has to appeal to your readers. Try using optimization tools like Yoast SEO to improve their readability, include focus keywords and drive traffic to the site.

Of course, when using SEO, you don’t lose the essence of the content. You want to rank high on Google pages so that you are easily found on the search engine but you don’t want just to have hit and run audience who visit your site and discover you don’t have any good and useful content.

#3 Create Helpful Content

As you create your post, you have to make sure that the content is helpful for users and not just filled with advertising content. Just make sure your helpful content is more relatable than the ones found online because there’s a lot of blogs out there likely sharing the same content as you do.

Creating useful content will help you to retain your audience and keep them coming back for more. That’s how you can improve on your daily stats and readership.

#4 Improve Sharing

Viral content is spread online thanks to social media. If viewers see your post, they should be able to share it immediately with their connections easily. Add social media toolbars on your blog so users can share it. Share through word-of-mouth with people that you meet on a daily basis.

I love how I always provide MiddleMe’s website when I am giving career advice to Uber / Grab drivers, Starbucks barista or H&M retail staff. You never know who you meet so if you think your website has useful content that can help someone, spread the love instead of keeping it a secret.

#5 Be Active in Social Media

For viral content to continue raking hits for your new site, you should actively speak to your audience on social media. Reach out to the people who shared your links and if they got comments, respond to them. Users do love website owners who engage actively with the public and it will help drive traffic in the site.

#6 Share Old Content

As you keep updating your blog regarding new products, services and the like, your old posts will definitely be buried and forgotten. Use WordPress’ various tools to activate its auto-sharing functions for old posts so your viewers can read it as well.

This is something I need to do and haven’t had the time to do it yet. Sharing old content means that you use them as fillers on days you have nothing to write about or have writer’s block. This also means you need to post on a regular basis.

#7 Analyze Your User Engagement Data

User engagement helps you identify how long your viewers stay in your site and help you determine how you can increase your page views. Make sure your website enables your users to become involved with the content you are introducing. If it ain’t useful, it ain’t going to attract eyeballs.

Make sure you understand your audience and be prepared to evolve as your audience grow with you. Sticking to an old format because it works doesn’t allow your readers to see how you have grown over the years.

#8 Add HQ Images and Videos

Users do not like to look at text-only content as much as possible because it is boring to read and spend time on. In order to counter this, you can add high-quality photos and videos which would help your viewers understand your content better. I have written briefly about this before. It irks me when people have copyrighted stamp on their photos. Buy stock photos or go to copyright free websites to get good quality photos.

#9 Improve Website Speed and Security

Finally, your blog should load fast and protect viewers as they browse your content. Improve your website’s loading speed with tools like Google Page Speed to help you determine which aspects of your site needs to be optimized. Several plug-ins are available in WordPress’ Plugins Tool to help you get started on improving your website speed.

In terms of the security of your site, you can add SSL certificates so it will improve its rankings on search engines like Google.

Blogging is not very difficult to master, especially if you want to make it viral. You simply have to set it up in such a way a user would be drawn to your site once they see your content. With the tips I cited above, I hope that the traffic you want for your site slowly increases and stays that way.

I find the entire concept of getting traffic similar to a barter system. I wonder how many of us actually care to read and reflect on a post. All we care is to like and follow, with the sole intention of getting a like and follow back. I mean, look at the number of blogs floating around. I see people posting 10-15 posts each day. Just any junk they find. No quality, objective or sense. And yet they have a huge list of followers. The comments they receive are equally lame. “Good read”, “Nice read”, “Wonderful”, “Amazing”. As if people are participating in some stupid ritualistic practice of posting a comment, hoping to get a comment back.

Blogging was once a beautiful thing. Sharing ideas, views, stories. Now, blogging is a weird competition. A race to stay ahead. The focus has shifted from good content to digital marketing. I liked your article though. Very informative.

  7. Definitely, agree with being careful with email. I’ve stopped following a couple of sites because I was absolutely bombarded with notifications. One was a site that had multiple contributors but it was ridiculous the number of notifications I received daily.

Basically, it is to make sure you have content to keep it going and also to update your content. Good content should always be refreshed to keep it relevant and current.

What do you think of implementing the URL to your website on the images you use? Is that better than copyright?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Kally says:

There are plenty of websites that offer copyright free photos. Even with the URL, you will need to seek permission from the original owner.

Yes, I know. I meant, posting a photo you made yourself, or a picture you created yourself, and publishing it with your URL on it. Is that wise, or does it lead to irritation too?

That will be great. You need to protect your own photos. Just keep the website at the corner and in small fonts.

Please feel free to visit if you desire and see what I am about. You can look and never have to return again. 15. Hi I do have a question I noticed your cover page of your website is divided up into different categories how do I go about doing that is that on WordPress or is that separate website I’m not even sure to start with that entire concept

    1. Kally says:

It depends on the theme you are using with your WordPress. If your theme allows you to build up categories then it should going about creating new pages (not to be confused with posts) and then add them to your menu. You can find out more if you Google for instructions in regards to the theme you are using. Let me know if you need more help. 😊

People often forget that even a free WordPress site can be SEO optimized. My free WordPress site is less than 2 months old and already ranks on the first page of Google, Yahoo and Bing. The difficult part is to write engaging content that is properly optimized for search engines, one learns to find a balance over time. Thanks for sharing all these traffic tips, I appreciate it.
