Finding the Source of Your Career Problems

The first difficulty you’ll face is trying to find the root cause of your career problems. This is something that is not always that easy to do. When you’re not sure why you’re not having the success that you want to have, you can spend ages plodding along wondering what’s going wrong for you. You need to be harsh with yourself and think about the things that you could be doing better. This is not always easy, but you’ll never find the source of your career problems if you don’t look at yourself and the decisions you’ve made in the past.

You End Up Questioning All Your Previous Career Decisions

Finding the source of your problems often leads you to this. And as I mentioned above, it’s definitely a good thing to question the decisions you have made in your career in the past. That way, you can see where you went wrong and how things can be turned around. However, you don’t have to doubt your entire career plans and ambitions. Just because things are not going as perfectly as you wanted them to, that doesn’t necessarily mean you chose the wrong career path. Keeping faith and making some small changes can often be enough, so don’t overreact.

Financial Shortcomings Can Impact Your Life Massively

One of the major downsides of experiencing a failing career plan is that it can often mean that you don’t have the income that you had planned to have. If your income actually falls, this can have a huge impact on your life and lifestyle. You can then find yourself looking for ways of getting by until payday. Something has to change at that point. You either have to go in a new direction and find a way to get your career back on track or you have to start spending less money.

It’s Easy to Lose Focus and Settle for Second Best

Many people simply give up and accept their situation once their career starts to stall. Those people never get beyond their current level, and can languish in a position for years or decades. Although this is secure and there is nothing wrong with staying in a position if you want to, it doesn’t represent the growth and progression that many people look for in their careers. So, you have to be careful not to fall into that trap when your career begins to flounder. You will never reach your full potential if you settle for second best.

You Need to Work Out a Way to Impress

Sometimes, it’s all about being able to impress the people that matter. If you want to move up to that next level and take your career a little further, your boss needs to see you as someone who can deliver and take the business forward. Show them that you have new ideas, and that you have the potential to be a real asset for the company. If you allow yourself to simply fade into the background and never stand out, you will definitely find it hard to progress your career and get to where you want to be.

Look for New Ways to Challenge Yourself

Challenging yourself can bring out the best in you and show the world that you’re on the up. Part of the reason why your career is stagnating might be down to the fact that you are no longer offering yourself as much of a challenge as you used to. This leads to boredom, and boredom is never a particularly good thing for your career in the long-term. By keeping yourself interested in your career, you will keep striving and keeping wanting to advance. That can be really important, so don’t be content to sit back and get bored.

You Might Have to Consider a Fresh Start Elsewhere

It can sometimes be a good idea to opt for a change of scenery when your career is becoming stagnant. By looking elsewhere and taking on a new job at another company, you might be able to shake off some of the things that were holding you back. Maybe your old boss wasn’t helping you to progress, or maybe the company had internal problems that were limiting your advancement. Or maybe you just got bored if working in the same place on the same projects and you just want to do something new.

Reshaping Your Reputation

Your reputation matters a lot too. When you have a good reputation, moving on up and taking advantage of new opportunities will be so much easier for you to do. But if your reputation has suffered lately, this could be what is holding you back and causing your career to stall. To stop that problem from getting bigger, you should try to reshape your reputation and take back control of the situation.

When you’re career is stalling, it can really bring you down. But you need to push on and look for ways to help yourself out of your current situation. A stalling career can always be revitalised and brought back to life, so never give up on your original career aims.

Agree with these points here and if we find ourselves stuck in a career rut, it can be due to a number of reasons. Speaking up and taking the initiative to start new things at work often always makes the job all the more fun, and it can open up doors for you. To thrive in a good supportive workplace is often a two way street – you have to be willing to do something different and make a difference in the workplace for you to feel productive on the job, and it will then work as a stepping stone to other opportunities.

Well Said, Mabel. The important part is to be willing to take the first step and take necessary risks. Most of us are way too complacent in our jobs to want to try something new.

Also make sure you’re keeping yourself knowledge-updated. This could mean paying for a course or seminar out of your own pocket, without waiting for some HR to remember you exist 🙂

Great advice! I always advocate constant learning. You never too old or too busy to upgrade yourself.

  4. There are times a career stall is beyond our control, as when a specific field is changing rapidly, an industry is heavily impacted by economic trends, or an old technology is being phased out. At such times, we may have to re-evaluate our skill set and choose a new career path. That may require that we obtain additional education (even in mid-life).
