Fantasy Jobs that I have always wanted to Try

Do you have a fantasy job or jobs that you have always wanted to try? I’m not talking about the ones you wanted for your career but the jobs where you sometimes think “Hmmm… what would it be like to be in his or her shoes?”

I have. And still do as some of my younger days, I often fantasy roles that I would love to try my hands on but not necessarily have the passion of. You know, just to feel like walking in their shoes for a couple of days, weeks.

Here are some of my fantasy jobs to share with you…

L’Oréal Glampuss Receptionist
You know those kind of perfectly coiffed ladies in their smart grey suit, black killer 5-inch heels, carefully manicured nails and red lipsticks that stare you down at the entrance of L’Oréal as if you are naked. Yup, I would love to be one even though I hate wearing heels. I did get to have a taste of being a receptionist last month, but that is a story for next post. Keep a lookout for it!

Starbucks Barista
I don’t drink coffee, but the aroma smells so good I don’t mind being surrounded by it all day. I was a bartender during my school holidays some twenty years ago, and it had been nothing but fun. I don’t know if I still have the energy to keep up the pace but I would love to try out for a week or two just to reminisce the good old days and learning to make great coffee is a useful skill that I’m pretty sure my significant other will deeply appreciate.

Second Hand Bookstore Minder
Or sales associate. I don’t know what you call them. Sadly, Singapore does not have much of these bookstores left even in Malaysia, it is hard pressed to locate them, and most of what is left are tended by their owners. Too many of the readers have turned their backs away from paperbacks and hard copies, choosing e-reading instead, leading a slow, steady death of brick and mortar bookstores. The thing is that I really love second-hand books and I have a healthy collection of them. So I really would like to be surrounded by the dusty, moldy smell of old books all day and all night.

Traffic Warden
Maybe it is a fetish of mine to see drivers dashed across the road so they can reach their cars in time before I issue a summon for wrongful parking. Or it may be derived from the satisfaction that I will get when I issue fines to inconsiderate drivers who park at handicap lots when they are abled bodies. Somewhat strange, given that I don’t drive at all and I feel so strongly about equality road use and road safety.

Door Bitch
She’s the queen of the hottest clubs. She will either make you shrivel and die in front of your so-called good buddies when she denied you entry to the coolest club or give you instant access without having to queue (and beg) for hours. Yes, I want to be in her shoes even just for a night. To be the judge of who makes the cut and who stays in the line. It’ll be so out of character for me for once to let the bitchy side of me reign free.

DJ
Maybe I had too many decent day jobs and not enough night jobs to quench my thirst for night jobs. I would really love to be a DJ for a night, playing a mix of retro, house and radio pop music. The real satisfaction comes from folks bobbing their heads and grooving to the beat. But I guess there are too many technicalities involved, and I’ll gladly settle for a door bitch instead. At least, I know I don’t have to practice my killer glare. I do it all day with my cats when they are naughty.

So there you have it! 6 fantasy jobs that I would love to try my hands on. Calling all companies out there if you have a vacancy for the above positions and don’t mind exploiting free labour for a day or two, I’m game to try.

When I was younger my dream job was a gynaecologist/obstetrician. Then I clued in that I might have to deal with a delivery death. That would destroy me.

Never thought of it, but I’d probably do a great job as a nasty traffic warden on a mission to try to clean up a bit of the horrendous traffic-blocking double parking in this city, most of which goes un-fined 😦

Dear Kally, this is a wonderful topic, as all of yours :). Well, I would have liked to be the editor at a Publishing House and also to be in charge with the art and design of the book covers. I would like to have my own publishing house or bookshop where to present the stories of books in words and colors. I also like second hand books because of the price and the smell and because I wanted to recreate the collection of books I had in my parents’ house.

  9. I’ve done the coffee house and DJ gigs… They were great but I tell you that I would go back to the coffee house gig in a heartbeat! Perhaps I can open a coffeehouse with books and be the DJ there… Now THAT would be my fantasy come true.

  10. Being a DJ would be great – I would be horrible at it, though.

I think some time as a rock star would be pretty awesome myself.

  12. That was a very good list, I compliment you, there is one thing I do not like you as and that is the door bitch. I can’t think of any jobs I would really want at my advanced age, unless it would be president.
