The difference between a job and a career

It is actually pretty obvious when you talk to someone and asked them what their job is; if their eyes lit up and their hands get animated, they have more than a job, they have passion and they have a career. One may argue that not all jobs lead to a career, I shall correct them with a Chinese saying “行行出状元”. Simply means that for every job, there is always a master.

You can be a waiter, however, if you have passion in service and the food & beverage industry, you might climb to be a restaurant branch manager, a Michelin star restaurant head or even open one of your very own restaurant one day.

You can be a mechanic but with your passion and determination, you might own your own chain of garage one day.

You can be a retail associate but with your passion and meticulous eye for fashion, you can venture into becoming a fashion buyer, a merchandiser or even a designer one day.

I have been droning on about passion in some of my posts. Is it really important? This keyword is actually what seems to separate someone who groans and moan as they get out of bed, squeezing every second they can get, snuggly under the warm covers versus someone who is already at the office half an hour before work starts, greeting everyone cheerfully, eagerly anticipating the day’s challenges head on.

Sure, everyone has a “off day” where you don’t feel like going to work and would rather curl up in front of your Netflix, watching the latest season of Nachos (who wouldn’t, right?) But if you find yourself looking at the clock, counting down to minutes that you will be released from your desk day after day, I think it’s time for you to stop watching cute kittens video on your work desktop and start scouting around Jobstreet for a new job.

Passion equals to determination and commitment. With determination and commitment, you will strive to do your best and you will be happy while doing so. The job is no longer a duty or a means to an end but you made it from a mere role and shape it into an art, a skill, a creation of your own. Passion is what will keep you on and on even when times are bad and workload gets crazy. Passion is what keeps the negativity away as you cut through the naysayers like a hot knife through a cold slab of butter.

Who knows you might create a legacy of your own?

As I love to quote from my favourite role model, “You’ve got to find what you love,” Steve Jobs said. “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”

  2. Very well said Kally.
Yes there is a diff in a job and a career.
Job is to grab the money after completion of the week or month.
Career is to put efforts, love, passion, time, attention, commitment, patience and all such sorts then look to the money aspect, the sign for prosperity.
In any job as you say there is something hidden that one could become in which or if He/She is interested.

I see a long absence of you in my blog, do come when you have time, there is lot waiting for you.
    Regards,
    Shiva

Passion is a bit of a high bar. I think the key to getting out of bed for any work is simply always doing your best on the job. Some kind of satisfaction will follow, and maybe a Career will follow – or won’t, but it’s not necessarily the point.

Hi Bea! Yes, passion is a bit of a high bar. Sometimes doing the best on the job may take a toll on someone if he hanker for something more rather than a job to make ends meet. The point is that we should always try in different field to find out where our passion lies in. Either way, like you have said, satisfaction will follow. 🙂

Kally, you said it well. When passion is there, the job is a career, doing what you like and not what you have to do.

I agree with you! I have done jobs that I don’t have passion about and I have had my careers where I am beaming full of passion. It is about what you love to do.

I kind of just fell into my career because I didn’t have a job after college. Its been over ten years and I am still in my field. Been thinking of changing it up a bit though. I feel as though I have been taking the easy way out.

  11. Absolutely! I think far many people complain about the current jobs they’re in (because they don’t enjoy it), but don’t actively try to do anything about it.

That’s true. Too many folks out there just resign to their fate but I felt it is really a waste of time, if you don’t enjoy the least bit of your job.
